Urgent Care Q & A

What dental emergencies call for urgent care?

It can be hard to know what constitutes a dental emergency that calls for urgent care. Here are some common dental emergencies:

  • Knocked out teeth
  • Cracked teeth
  • Severe toothache
  • Objects stuck in your teeth

What should I do immediately following a dental emergency?

Here are some tips that can help you effectively care for certain common dental emergencies before you come in for your urgent care appointment:

Knocked out tooth

Keep it moist at all times. Try to place it back in the socket without touching the root. If you can’t, keep it in between your cheek and gums, or in milk until you can get to Dr. Fong’s office.

Cracked tooth

Rinse your mouth out right away with warm water to clean the area. Use cold compresses on and around your face to keep swelling down.

Severe toothache

Rinse your mouth with warm water to thoroughly clean the area and gently floss to remove any food caught in your teeth.

Objects stuck in your teeth

Don’t try to use sharp objects. Gently floss to try and remove the object that’s caught.

After experiencing a dental emergency, it’s important that you call the office as quickly as possible and provide ample detail about your condition. The time between your emergency and your urgent care appointment can determine whether or not your tooth is lost or saved.

How can I prevent dental emergencies that require urgent care?

In some cases, accidents are unavoidable. However, there are certain precautions you can take that limit your risk of experiencing dental emergencies.

When you play sports or participate in recreational activities, be sure to wear a mouthguard. Avoid chewing hard foods like ice, hard candies, or popcorn kernels that can crack or chip your teeth. Also, never use your teeth to cut things.
